Excerpt from The PC Pioneers
Larry Ellison was born to single mother Florence Spallman in New York City but he was brought up by his aunt and uncle in Chicago. He was not to meet his mother again until he was forty-eight years old. His surname came from his adoptive parents who on immigration to the USA took it from the famous landing point, Ellis Island.
He would make his fortune from the Oracle database software.
This was quite an unlikely start in life for someone who would go on to become the world’s eighth richest person with a personal wealth of $43 billion.
In 2013 he purchased 24 x multi-million dollar mansions in Malibu California for $250m including twelve homes on Carbon Beach, known locally as Billionaire’s beach. Then purchased the island Lanai, off the coast of Maui, Hawaii for $500 million.
