Hunger and stuff… just imagine!

Dec 7th – Daily Mail: ‘Justin Welby [Archbishop of Canterbury] last night called for state to take over running food banks’, ‘for the Government to do more to eradicate hunger.’

UNICEF’s targets for 2015 include:

  • reducing by half the proportion of people living on less than a dollar a day. More than 30% of children in developing countries – about 600 million – live on less than US $1 a day
  • reducing by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger. Every 3.6 seconds one person dies of starvation. Usually it is a child under the age of 5.

Look up ‘hunger’ on Google Images and all you get is pages of ‘Hunger Games’.

Dec 8th – Fox News: ‘Pope Francis has prayed that humanity be freed of “slavery” to material things as he visited Rome’s swank shopping area near the Spanish Steps.’

Yet despite the current austerity policies of our governments we see appalling scenes like the Black Monday wrestling over big-screen televisions, with reasonably insignificant discounts.

Most in employment have the target to grow their organisation compared with this time last year, compared with competitors… Industrial growth and conspicuous consumption is our demi-God.

Next year in the UK we get to vote for a new governement, but I believe if we wait for our religious leaders or political ones to solve these inequalities then we are just kidding ourselves, it has to start within us and our personal actions and decisions.

John Lennon said it much more elegantly:

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today…

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

Now that’s a state and a philosophy that I can live with!
