IBM System/360 released #history

On this day in 1964, IBM released its IBM System/360 family of fully-compatible IC computers

By 1964 IBM had seen off ‘the BUNCH’ (Burroughs, Univac, NCR, Control Data and Honeywell) – between them they had lost over $150m in the ‘60s against IBM’s $3.5 billion profits.

But there had been a cost because IBM had seven completely incompatible systems – 1400, 1620, 7030, 7040, 7070, 7080, 7090 –  a team led by Fred Brooks released the 360 – for 360-degrees as it was designed to solve any problem.
